Mark Patterson's M3 is now available for free, for those interested in exploring it.

Unless I missed something, what is free (gratis vs libre, as in cost) is an evaluation copy of a Microsoft Windows executable. Oh well [sigh].

Larry, yes, I believe that has always been Mark Patterson's platform of choice.

I just noticed the last post, and I'd like to add that I had no problem downloading and installing M3 on two computers running Windows 7, 32 and 64 bits. It seems to run just fine even from an USB 2.0 Flash drive. Very convenient! To be sure, I haven't done much with it yet, but at least it seems to be working fine. Might be a good option for learning.
