I was working for Smith Kline Clinical labs in Tampa, FL in the mid-70s when they decided to implement the Meditec lab software written in MUMPS or MIIS i don't actually remember which dialect. I do remember that I could use A[3] to indicate the 3rd "^" piece. The system ran 15-20 users on a small DG Eclipse with about 60 MB of disk. I did a lot of development for interfacing new devices and eventually moved to International Clinical Labs (ICL) (St. Louis) where I work extensively on a in house developed lab system. I built several subsystems including a Quality Analysis and Graphing and an email system. I stopped programming in MUMPS in the early 80s. It was the last language for which I would be able to claim syntax expert. I managed and designed for C, C++, and Java but never mastered the syntax.

Recently I had a complex set of data I needed to parse and thought if I could only have a MUMPS instance on my Windows 7 or Mac OS X machine I could solve the problem pretty quickly.
Well I am working on it and it is not going as smoothly as I had hoped.
I am happy to see there is activity though and will try to stay in touch with this group and contribute if at all possible.

MUMPS is a language that solves some problems with a development cycle time that just cannot be met by other solutions that I am aware of.

Today I live in the Dallas area and work as a Software Architect.

Just for curiosity, what parts of the MUMPS syntax are giving you problems?

I think the A[3]+2 syntax must be MIIS, or Magic, (Meditech languages)
since in MUMPS, it would be read as:
A "contains" 3 "follows" the (force numeric) 2

Tom,

I've been doing just what I think you're talking about, using MUMPS to parse and rework some nasty data files. Intersystems distributes a single-user version of Caché that does everything I need. You can download a copy at http://www.intersystems.com/cache/downloads/index.html

If you haven't used Caché (or ISM/11) to manipulate external documents, I'd be glad to send you some helpful tips I got from the folks at ISM.
