I am trying to install the newest version of GTM and the comand I am entering is:

sudo ./configure

You must run Configure as root.

Any help?

I ran into the same problem. It turned out that iwas trying to compile the 32-bit version on a 64-bit system.

Here is what I would try nowadays. This will work on Ubuntu or on Debian Jessie or later.
Code:
$ sudo apt-get install -y fis-gtm
